hard to explain, but it's the feeling i get when i read about other people's travels and they're naming explicitly some place i've never been. so you know exactly where they were. and that they went there because it is famous or because it has an interesting name. tiannamen square. albequerque, new mexico.
and then read about someone's travels (a non canadian, perhaps) who mentions someplace familiar as though it was exotic. moncton, new brunswick.
they're all just places. right?
